Woodwardia areolata, Netted Chain Fern is easily grown in organically rich, medium to wet, well-drained soils in part shade to full shade. Does well in average garden soils and will take considerable sun as long as soils are kept consistently moist. It grows 1-2' tall; sterile fronds are usually somewhat shorter than the fertile fronds, the latter of which will have the sori (spores) on their undersides. Spreads by branching and creeping rhizomes, and will naturalize over time into large colonies in optimum growing conditions.

Common in the coastal plain and SE Piedmont. Click to see it's range in North Carolina.
