Viburnum rafinesqueanum, Downy Arrowwood is among the smallest of the viburnums. It matures to a 3-6 ft. shrub, sometimes taller, with multiple straight stems in a loose habit. It is very shade tolerant and will commonly be found in a forest understory, but can be grown in full/part sun. It will initially require water at planting, but it is drought tolerant once established. White, flat-topped flower clusters are followed by dark blue berries that are consumed by birds and other wildlife. Fall foliage is colorful.

Found throughout the eastern and central Piedmont, but absent in the Mountains and the Coastal Plain . Click to see its range in North Carolina
