Calycanthus floridus, Sweet Shrub, also commonly know as Carolina Alspice, is a large shrub that can grow to about 10' tall. Growing best in rich, moist soils, it tolerates a range of full sun to deep shade. It's beautiful, fragrant and attractive maroon colored flowers appear from April through the end of May. While attracting butterflies and bees, it will also bring in many species of beneficial beetles. 
 
Native to the Mountains and Piedmont of NC, possibly coastal as well. Click to view its native range in North Carolina.
