Stokesia laevis, Stokes Aster - this 1-2' perennial is easily grown in moist but well-drained soil in full sun but can also grow in partial sun. Forms clumps that can be divided after establishment, and large (3") fluffy flowers bloom from June to early/mid fall (especially if deadheaded). It is native to wetlands, bottomlands, wet pinewoods, savannas and ditches mostly along the coastal plain. Prefers moist, sandy soils, but has surprisingly good drought and heat tolerance. Wet soil in winter is the main cause of death for this plant. A well-drained soil is essential.
A SE native but is technically a waif in NC. Click to see its range in the US.
