Senna hebecarpa, American Senna can grow from 4-6' and bright yellow flowers bloom July-August, attracting many bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. Autumn brings beautiful leaf colors and the formation of long black pods with seeds favored by larger birds like wild turkeys. It is found in moist open woodlands, and in disturbed areas in part sun.  A well-behaved perennial, it is easy to start from seed or divide plant in early spring or fall.                                                               

 

It is a larval host and nectar source for the Cloudless Giant Sulphur butterfly (Phoebis sennae), and is also of special value to native bumble bees.

 

Scattered over most of the Mountains and Piedmont; does not occur in the Coastal Plain. Click to see its range in North Carolina
