Little Bluestem is a small clump forming grass that can reach a maximum size of 4 feet tall and 3 feet wide. I requires full sun but can tolerate moist to dry conditions in various soil compositions. It's blueish green foliage grabs your attention but is typically avoided by deer. During winter, the dormant leaf blades remain attractive becoming a golden bronze color. It is a host plant to many species of butterflies including skippers and the Common Wood-Nymph. The seeds become a food source for over wintering birds.
