Rudbeckia hirta, Blackeyed Susan, is a 'cornerstone' garden perennial that grows in moist to dry, well-drained soils, tolerates partial-shade, is juglone tolerant, deer resistant, grows to about 3.5' in height and produces yellow daisy-like flowers from summer through to fall that are enjoyed by loads of beneficial pollinators. It is a terrific self-seeder, and will slowly fill up gaps in your garden beds as growing seasons pass. It is a larval host to the gorgone checkerspot and silvery checkerspot butterflies whose range includes NC. Dead seedhead stalks should be left to stand through winter, as they are a valuable food source for birds, including finches.
