Rhus copallinum, Winged Sumac - This is a large open shrub which typically grows to 10' tall (rarely to 30' as a tree) and spreads by underground runners which spread to form large colonies that provide dense, shrubby cover for birds and wildlife. The flowers are yellow, flowering in the summer, and are followed by showy red clusters of berries which persist into the winter and attract wildlife. Leaves turn flame red in autumn. The tree wants to grow with several trunks, but can be trained to grow with a single trunk. This species grows best in full sunlight to part shade and well-drained soils, but once established, is resistant to the effects of pollution, drought, heavy pruning, compacted soil, and transplanting.
