Quercus lyrata, Overcup Oak is an oak in the white oak group. The common name, overcup oak, refers to its acorns that are mostly enclosed within the acorn cap It is native to lowland wetlands areas. It is a slow-growing tree that often takes 25 to 30 years to mature/produce acorns and can reach average heights of 40-75', much higher in woodland/optimal settings. It has an estimated lifespan of 400 years. Best grown in acidic, moist to wet loams in full sun. Tolerates some part shade but not full shade.
