Prunus americana, American Plum is easily grown as a large shrub or small tree, reaching up to 15 feet. It is adapted to coarse- and medium-textured soils that are well drained, but not to fine soils (silt or clay). Beneficially, the shrub survives harsh winters, down to temperatures of -40 degrees F, but has little tolerance for shade, drought, or fire. The tree will send up root suckers as it reaches maturity, forming large colonies, and the branches are often thorny. One of the first trees to bloom in spring (March), followed by small red, edible fruits that ripen in early summer and are a source of food for birds and animals.
