Orders for Pontederia cordata, Pickerelweed, must be placed at least a day in advance as they need to be removed from my pond.
Pickerelweed is an aquatic plant the can grow 4 feet tall and the individual plants up to two feet wide. However, it will easily spread to form large clumps over 10' in diameter if left alone. It prefers full sun to part sun, rich organic soils in shallow standing water up to about a foot deep. It can tolerate being out of the water as long as the soil stays wet. It's purple flowers emerge in May and bloom through the first frost in October, making it one of our longest bloomers in NC. Butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds are drawn in by it's blooms. It supports a few specialized bee species including the Long-horned Bee and is a host for a few beetle and moth species including the Pickerelweed Borer Moth and the White-tailed Diver.
