Pinus taeda, Loblolly Pine is the largest of the southern pines; in cultivation, depending on site conditions it can reach a height of 60-90+ feet (taller in the wild) with a diameter of 1.5-5'. It is also one of the fastest growing pines. Grow in medium to wet soils in full sun; it is intolerant of shade. Prefers moist, acidic soils with poor drainage. Performs best in climates with hot and humid summers and mild winters. It will lose it's lower branches as it grows into maturity. It is a very important wildlife and habitat species; it attracts birds, butterflies, and is the larval host to the Elfin butterfly.
