Phytolacca americana, Pokeberry - This perennial is easily grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Prefers consistently moist soils, but will tolerate short periods of drought. Will naturalize in the landscape by self-seeding, and is spread by birds. It is a vigorous, fast grower that typically reaches 4-10’ tall in a single growing season, with a spread 3-5’ wide. Blooms first appear in early summer and continue into early fall, which then grow berries on brightly colored, almost fluorescent pink stalks. While all parts of the plant are toxic to humans, the berries are a popular food source for songbirds such as gray catbird, northern mockingbird, northern cardinal, and brown thrasher, as well as other birds and some small animals. It is a host plant to many caterpillars, including the Great Leopard Moth.
