This low growing perennial grows to be only about a foot tall and 1.5' wide. Growing best in Part sun to deep shade, in moist soils with various compositions. Blue flowers emerge in April and May making it a great early nectar source for bees, hummingbirds, and other pollinators. 

 

Found in the Mountains and Piedmont but is fairly sporadic throughout NC.
