This native biennial can grow to be 5-7 feet tall and 3 feet wide. Being a biennial, it will die after it sets seed in year two, but seeds will easily germinate creating new plants. It grows best in moist sandy soils in full sun. Its showy yellow flowers will start to emerge in later spring and until fall, making it one of NCs longest bloomers. The flowers open in the evening, attracting moths throughout the night while specialized bee species visit them in the early morning before the close in the heat of the day. Host plant to many beetles, butterflies and moths.
