Late Boneset, Eupatorium serotinum is a fall-blooming, perennial about 3'-6' tall. It grows in open sites (either dry or moist), and can hybridize with other members of the genus Eupatorium. Unlike wind-pollinated plants in this genus, E. serotinum is insect pollinated, of which it's flowers are very popular with a wide range of bees, wasps and other insects. It is also a host plant to native insect caterpillars. This plant provides late-season nectar for monarch butterflies and there is also evidence that pyrrolizidine alkaloids produced by E. serotinum are beneficial to Monarchs.
