Hibiscus moscheutos, Swamp Rosemallow - A ready re-seeder, this wetland species is easily grown in average, medium to wet soils in full sun, but tolerates some shade. Best in moist, organically rich soils, but grows also in average garden soils as long as those soils are not allowed to dry out.  It typically grows to 3-7’ tall and to 2-4’ wide, but if bushy plants are desired, pinch back growing tips when they reach 8” and again at 12”. Large, showy 4-6" flowers emerge in early-mid summer (ranging in color from white to light pink to deep pink/red) through to early fall and attracts pollinators and hummingbirds. Cut back stems to approximately 3-4 inches in late autumn. New growth shoots are slow to emerge in spring. However, once new growth begins, it proceeds quite rapidly.

Common to the coastal plain and eastern 2/3rds of the Piedmont. Click here to see its range in North Carolina
