Heliopsis helianthoides, Early Sunflower is a very popular rhizomatous herbaceous perennial growing 16–60 in tall. It may be found in wooded areas and tallgrass prairie, and sometimes along roadsides in moist, fertile soil in full sun. The flowers are produced from midsummer to early autumn and attracts a number of pollinators and hummingbirds.
