Galax urceolata, Galax, also known as 'beetleweed', is an evergreen herbaceous perennial plant with flower stalks growing to 12 - 18" (rarely 24") tall, with a rosette of leathery leaves, which turn bronze-reddish during winter. It grows best in a dappled-shade woodland setting with rich, well drained soils. The flowers are produced in late spring to early summer, white in color and on a single upright stalk, and are attractive to pollinators. Grows in slowly-expanding clumps and spreads by reddish colored rhizomes.
Abundant in mountains and foothills, infrequent elsewhere. Click to see it's range in North Carolina
