Celtis laevigata, Sugarberry (aka, southern hackberry) is a medium to large tree that often attains a height of 80 to 100 ft at maturity in the wild, less in cultivated areas. Prefers medium to wet, organically rich, well-drained soils in full sun, but is tolerant of part shade. Also tolerates wind, urban pollutants and a wide range of soil conditions, including poor soils. Flowers in the spring are insignificant, and develop into edible berries by summer that are a valued resource for birds and animals.
Common in most of the piedmont and coastal plain. Click to see it's range in North Carolina
