Bignonia capreolata, Crossvine is a vigorous woody vine that climbs by tendrils with adhesive discs and can grow from 35-50' or longer in optimal conditions. Does best in sun, when it flowers best, but can also tolerate heavy shade. The flowers, which bloom from late spring to early summer, are tubular and trumpet-shaped, typically 1.5–2 inches long. They exhibit a vibrant orange to reddish-orange hue with yellow throats. Blooming in clusters, they are highly fragrant and serve as an essential nectar source for hummingbirds and bees.

Flowers are followed by greenish, pod-like seed capsules (to 7” long) which mature in late summer and persist into fall. These capsules ripen in late summer, splitting open to release numerous winged seeds that help it spread to new areas, though it also spreads through root stolons and may need to be contained.

Common throughout the piedmont and coastal plains. Click to see it's range in North Carolina
